Frequently Asked Questions

What classes do you offer?

We have four different levels for our players: Hot Shots, Big Shots, Rippers and Rollers. The classes are based on both age and playing ability.

What are the ages?

Our classes are for players enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade. If your player is younger or older than that, we have some materials we can pass along to get you headed in the right direction.

What does a typical lesson look like?

Our lessons are broken into four parts: skill work, games-based skill development, point/match play and wrap-up. All of our classes run for 90 minutes except our Hot Shots class which runs for 60 minutes.

What is the length of a typical session?

Our sessions are broken down according to the local school calendar, running in the fall, winter and spring. A typical session runs somewhere between 9 and 13 weeks and takes into account school holidays and days off.

Do you offer summer camps?

It depends on the location, but yes. In many of our locations, we offer full-week summer camps that run from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Check with your local coaches.

What is your teaching philosophy?

We use a games-based approach to teaching children how to play tennis. Essentially, this means that we introduce a skill, then let them play games in order to develop that skill. We do not do a lot of dead ball feeding, nor do we spend a lot of time working on specific technical stroke issues. Our main focus is on teaching kids how to play tennis, not how to hit shots. That being said, we do give specific instruction where needed. Our goal is more in line with teaching our players important life skills like teamwork, problem solving and more, using tennis as the conduit.

Who are the coaches?

We hire local coaches who are trained by Coach Tom and the IPlayTennis! professional staff. Our lead coaches are usually current or former educators, post-graduate students or other adults with educational backgrounds. We also have younger assistant coaches, sometimes players who have passed through our programs and moved on to higher level tennis, other times local college players.

Does my child need a racquet or tennis balls?

We provide all tennis balls and have plenty of extra racquets. If you do send your player with a racquet, which is encouraged, please make sure is is the right size. Youth players should not play with adult racquets. There is a video on our media page that goes over the different aspects of youth tennis courts and equipment.

How much does it cost?

Session costs vary based on length, days off, etc., but all sessions must be paid in full. We do not offer a single-class option.

What is the makeup policy?

In case of inclement weather and when indoor space is not available, we will cancel classes. A scheduled makeup day or days will be planned at the beginning of the session. These will be offered whether or not there are any canceled classes during the session. Additionally, if a player misses a class, we will allow, when available, that player to participate in a class of the same level that runs on a day other than their regular class.

What is the refund policy?

We do not offer refunds once a session has begun. If a player needs to miss a portion of a session for medical or other approved reasons, we will offer a credit towards a future session or camp. All payments are due by the beginning of the session.
